A ‘Dragon Den’ for documentary films and TV series

Doc Pitch is a significant opportunity for filmmakers to pitch their documentary proposals to industry experts, to find new partnerships, receive feedback and progress their ideas to funding stage.

Submissions are open!  Deadline is 5pm Friday, 16 March 2018

The 12th Doc Pitch will be held on Friday, 25 May 2018 at the University of Auckland, as part of Screen Edge Forum.

Doc Edge is an Academy Award® qualifying festival for short documentaries. The Doc Edge team would like to invite all documentary filmmakers working on a project and seeking financing and/or co-production opportunities to submit their project.

Up to 15 projects will be selected by our dedicated team members. The filmmakers of this selection will get the chance to pitch their project in front of a panel consisting of national and international commissioning editors, distributors, producers, broadcasters and other funders.  There will be a prize for Best Doc Edge Pitch, which includes cash and services for the winning project.

Doc Pitch seeks projects with international appeal, challenging/innovative subject matter and treatment/delivery with co-production potential. Projects that push creative boundaries and/or have multi-platform potential are encouraged.

Applications are welcome for:

  – Feature (over 40’) festival documentary
  – Television documentary series
  – Short (20’- 40’)
  – Short (under 20’)

Ideally, we are looking for projects that are:

  – Fast paced storytelling
  – Contemporary not historical
  – Brilliant storytelling and characters rather than portraits – a complete story arc which really pulls you along with payback at the end
  – Narrative and story led
  – Relevant globally
  – Fresh
  – Diverse characters
  – Led by actuality/action rather than interviews/talking heads, and not entirely observational
  – Purposeful with impact
  – Extra material and a social media and marketing campaign
  – High production value – great sound
  – Not niche but with a strong siren call for audience hungry for information and story.
